The MULO Dozen: October in Review

Share this:

As is always the case in the MULO (multi-location) world, the ecosystem in October was a blend of tricks and treats.

The big news for November is the re-launch of Street Fight LIVE, but here are some highlights from the past month that are almost as exciting.

  1. Chipotle opens in Dubai. It joins the many MULO fast-casual brands that are taking their signature items around the globe. (BOOM)
  2. Discount stores are continuing to struggle as the “sale culture” within major brands seems to be here to stay and consumers can find the best prices online. Big Lots closed more stores this month. (BUST)
  3. Wawa leads in consumer satisfaction. Just because a brand is known for convenience and product variety doesn’t mean it can’t offer service, too! (CUSTOMER VOICES)
  4. BurgerFi files for bankruptcy. Burgers are still popular, but the grilling field has gotten super-competitive.(BUST)
  5. Spirit Halloween tests Xmas stores. After all, consumers have proven that seasonal spending is an essential component of the retail economy. SNL had some fun with Spirit Halloween this season. The irreverent clip is here.   (INNOVATION)
  6. Perkins unveils a new restaurant concept. Just because a brand is known for pancakes, they don’t have to limit themselves to breakfast. We’ve already seen how IHOP flipped the script, along with its pancakes. (INNOVATION)
  7. PetSmart appointed a new CEO. Churn in management has become commonplace in the MULO world. (LEADERSHIP)
  8. Orvis is downsizing. As with many categories, online shopping and competitive pressures contribute to store closures (especially for brands that require big footprints). (BUST)
  9. BBB and The Container Store Jump into Bed (BOOM) but…
  10. Beyond is Hurting (BUST)
  11. Also, on the negative news front, Dennys is downsizing. (BUST)
  12. Now, for some happy news! YEXT is coming to Street Fight LIVE (INNOVATION)
