What’s new at the C-store (convenience store)?

The lowly truck stop is now tech-powered, innovative, and a model for other MULO (multi-location) brands to learn from.

Among the seven big trends we’ll see along the road at at the corner store in the months ahead are:

  1. EV chargers. Forecasters believe these necessary roadside amenities will eventually equal the number of gas pumps. All the major C-store brands are focused on installing them
  2. A more expansive and unique array of beverages. Fruit-flavored drinks, discounted coffee, and sparkling teas are among some drinks spotted at C-stores. But we don’t believe that brand-name sodas and slushies will die off.
  3. Personalized and sophisticated loyalty programs and merch. No longer do consumers think that all restrooms and chips are equal. Many of the C-store brands have introduced app-based loyalty programs. Members of these programs are reported to spend 12 percent more than non-members. True brand fans can even buy logo-ed merchandise on C-store brand websites and in-store.
  4. Speaking of brand, private label products are on the rise. Buc-ee’s and 7-Eleven have both been heralded as brands that have adopted this strategy, which leverages loyalty, keeps prices down for consumers, and yields bigger margins.
  5. Food is becoming healthier. Fried food fans and consumers with sweet teeth and nicotine cravings can still find what they want at the c-store, but health-conscious shoppers now have more snack options. Salads and breakfast bowls are among the foods that road warriors and local shoppers can now find in c-stores’ refrigerator sections.
  6. AI is being leveraged in all aspects of store management. From inventory management to theft prevention to consumer targeting, artificial intelligence is invaluable to understanding who’s stopping and shopping and what they’re buying. Here are some ways smart C-store brands are upping their automation game.
  7. What could be more convenience than stopping at a convenience store? Having the store come to  you! More convenience stores are offering delivery as an option. Just search “convenience store delivery” and you may be served up a number of offers from local C-stores that promise you’ll have your snacks and necessary items in less than 30 minutes. This is also a great example of how MULO brands need to stay on top of their local SEO to best meet consumers’ needs — whether they are buying a soft drink or a quinoa salad!
