Your Locations Show Up in AI – But Are They Recommended?
A consumer asks an AI assistant for a local business recommendation near one of your locations. Your brand location appears in the response. By most current measures, that’s a win — and it is.
But for MULO marketers managing local search performance for dozens, hundreds, or even thousands of locations, presence in AI-generated responses is only part of the performance picture.

Visibility and Sentiment: Understanding the Difference
AI visibility and AI sentiment are related but fundamentally different performance metrics, and they require different measurement frameworks.
AI visibility is a question of frequency: across the universe of relevant AI-generated responses for a given query and geography, how often does a particular location appear?
For a MULO, this question multiplies across every market, every location cluster, and every relevant query. A MULO with 400 locations isn’t just managing one trade-area visibility footprint — it’s managing 400, each competing against local independents and other chains within their own AI search context.
AI sentiment, on the other hand, is a question of quality: when AI generates a response that includes one of our locations, what descriptive language is it using, and is that language working for us or against us?
Unlike Google Search or Maps, AI doesn’t just list businesses. It characterizes them, synthesizing language from reviews, citations, business profiles, third-party content, and other signals to build a narrative around each location.
For a MULO, that narrative may be consistent across markets or it may vary dramatically from one city to the next, reflecting local reputational differences.

Measuring Both AI Visibility and Sentiment at Scale
For multi-location brands, standardized metrics that can be tracked, compared, and benchmarked across a portfolio are essential.
Share of AI Voice (SAIV) has emerged as the primary metric for AI visibility. It measures how frequently a given location appears across AI-generated responses for relevant queries within a defined geographic area, expressed as a percentage of total AI mentions in that competitive set.
At the location level, SAIV tells you whether a specific store or office is holding its own against local competitors in AI search. At the brand level, SAIV data can reveal which markets are underperforming and where AI visibility gaps are most acute.
Measuring AI sentiment starts with categorizing the language AI uses to describe each location — positive, negative, or neutral — and identifying the specific phrases driving those characterizations. This phrase-level data is where the actionable intelligence lives. Knowing that AI is describing one location as “efficient and well-staffed” while flagging another for “inconsistent quality” gives marketers and regional managers something concrete to work with.
A metric like Local Falcon’s Buyer Persuasion Score (BPS) takes sentiment measurement a step further by quantifying the net persuasive impact of AI language on a standardized scale. Rather than simply categorizing sentiment, BPS measures the degree to which AI is actively recommending — or dissuading potential customers from choosing — a given location.
A high BPS means AI is essentially functioning as an effective sales tool for that location. A low or negative BPS means AI visibility is, at best, a neutral presence and, at worst, an active liability in the consumer decision journey.

The SAIV-BPS Gap
The most strategically significant insight that emerges when both metrics are tracked simultaneously is the gap between visibility and persuasion — and for MULOs, this gap tends to be highly location-specific.
A location with high SAIV but low BPS is appearing frequently in AI responses but failing to convert that presence into recommendation momentum. The brand is in the conversation, but AI isn’t strongly advocating for it. In a competitive local market, that’s a major disadvantage — a consumer who gets an AI response that mentions your location neutrally alongside a competitor that it describes more enthusiastically is likely to choose the competitor.
Conversely, locations with lower SAIV but strong BPS are being actively recommended when they do appear, meaning they’re outperforming their visibility share in terms of persuasive impact. For MULOs looking to prioritize optimization resources, high-BPS, low-SAIV locations represent a clear opportunity: the sentiment foundation is already there; the goal is driving mention frequency.
What Moves the Needle on Sentiment
For enterprise brands accustomed to managing local visibility and reputation at scale, the inputs that influence AI sentiment will feel familiar. Review volume, recency, and quality, citation consistency, business profile completeness, and third-party editorial coverage all factor into how AI characterizes a location.
Where enterprise marketers can find additional leverage is in the deliberateness of that narrative-building. For example, digital PR campaigns that generate authoritative, positively-framed coverage of specific locations or markets can feed directly into the sources AI models reference.
Operational improvements that drive better reviews also translate directly into better AI language. The connection between real-world performance and AI-driven narrative is more direct than many brands currently appreciate.
The New Measurement Mandate
Most MULO marketing stacks already track traditional local search metrics like impressions, clicks, rankings, and conversions.
Optimizing for AI-powered local search requires adding two more metrics to that list: AI visibility, or how often locations appear, and sentiment, or what AI is saying when they do. Brands that can measure both, at the location level and across every market, operate with a significant visibility intelligence advantage over those that can’t.
