Streets Ahead: TikTok News, Google Reviews, and the New Rules of Local Visibility

In this week’s Streets Ahead update, SOCi discusses TikTok emerging as the top news platform, evidence that service areas don’t influence Local Rankings and Google now moderating review responses.

TikTok Emerges as the Top News Platform for Young Adults

The News  New survey data from the Pew Research Center indicates that TikTok has overtaken long-standing social platforms to become the leading source of news for Americans ages 18–29.

In 2025, 43% of young adults said they regularly get news from TikTok, edging out YouTube and Facebook at 41% each, and Instagram at 40%. Other platforms trail by a wider margin, with X at 21% and Reddit at 18%.

More broadly, social media continues to dominate news consumption for this demographic. Seventy-six percent of respondents said they often or sometimes rely on social platforms to stay informed about current events, reinforcing the role of short-form, algorithmically driven feeds in shaping how younger audiences discover and consume news

Why This Matters  This shift creates both upside and risk for brands. TikTok is no longer confined to trends and entertainment; it has become a discovery layer for what’s happening locally and which businesses matter in a community. Brands that consistently publish authentic, timely content, whether through event participation, local partnerships, behind-the-scenes moments, or fast reactions to cultural trends, are more likely to feel embedded in the local narrative. Increasingly, TikTok visibility is shaping foot traffic, brand credibility, and word-of-mouth discovery in real time.

More Evidence That Service Areas Don’t Influence Local Rankings

The News  Google has long struggled to treat service area businesses and their customers fairly in local search. For businesses that travel to the customer, the defined service area should function as an extension of their location and be treated as “in proximity” across that full footprint. From a consumer perspective, proximity is often secondary to quality and availability when a business is willing to come to them.

Yet time and again, the data suggests Google applies the same single-point proximity logic to service area businesses that it uses for traditional brick-and-mortar locations, regardless of the service area set or whether the address is hidden.

In a recent LinkedIn analysis, Claudia Tomina of Reputation Arm presents compelling evidence that this approach is intentional. Reviewing details from the Google API data leak earlier this year, Tomina found that service area information appears to be used primarily for informational and UI purposes … not as a meaningful ranking signal.

Why This Matters Authority building is the most reliable way to extend Google Business Profile visibility beyond immediate proximity. That means actively generating reviews, strengthening local social signals, earning relevant mentions, and consistently documenting where your brand shows up in the community. The goal is not just to rank nearby, but to become the most credible and complete answer across your entire service area.

Google Tightens Review Response Moderation

The News  Earlier this year, when Google announced it was sunsetting the Q&A feature on Google Business Profiles, it signaled a broader shift in how answers would surface in local search. The implication was clear: insight and authority would increasingly come not just from customer reviews themselves, but from how businesses respond to them.

That direction is now explicit. Google has confirmed it is actively reviewing review responses to ensure they comply with its content guidelines. According to Google’s help documentation for managing customer reviews, if a reply is not approved, the business will be prompted to edit it. Most responses are reviewed within 10 minutes, though in some cases the process can take up to 30 days.

Why This Matters  Review responses may face longer approval times in 2026. To minimize delays, businesses should respond to customer feedback promptly and professionally while ensuring replies strictly adhere to content guidelines. Avoid common violations such as keyword stuffing, overly promotional language, spam signals, or information that is irrelevant to the customer’s experience.
