Foursquare has just hit one billion checkins. The app had gone from 100 million checkins in July, 2010 to 200 million in Oct 2010 to 750 million checkins in June 2011. Along with the milestone, Foursquare has launched a new version of its app. (TechCrunch)

HipGeo, a location based social network backed by CitySearch and eHarmony execs, has launched an iPhone app that tracks your travels, then stitches together your photos, comments and pinned locations into an animated diary of each day. (ReadWriteWeb)

Topix, a site lightly trafficked in cities, enjoys a dedicated and growing following across the Ozarks, Appalachia and much of the rural South, establishing an unexpected niche in communities of a few hundred or few thousand people. “We’re running the Gawker for every little town in America,” Chris Tolles, Topix’s chief executive, said. DealsGoRound says it has uncovered a $577 million opportunity in the daily deals space. Nearly 22% of deals purchased from Groupon, LivingSocial, BuyWithMe and elsewhere go unredeemed according to a survey from Rice University. This represents a huge secondary market for re-selling deals.  (ReadWriteWeb)

AT&Ti Deals are now in Atlanta, Dallas and Los Angeles, and will likely be launching deals offerings in ten markets by the fourth quarter of 2011, according to AT&Ti VP of Business Development Todd Rose. By “early 2012, there will tentatively be a few dozen. The timetable might be accelerated based on how the deals distribution and ecosystem shapes up.” (Local Onliner)

Augmented reality app Blippar is partnering with Dublin newspaper Metro Herald and local TV show FYI to launch what it’s calling “the world’s first fully augmented reality newspaper.” Throughout this week, Metro Herald will be producing five ‘smart editions’ of its newspaper, where the interactive Blippar technology will be used across selected editorial content and advertising tied to place. In an effort to boost the floundering newspaper industry, the Associated Press is teaming up with 40 papers for a mobile coupon initiative. Dubbed iCircular, it will offer deals in a special section within the iPhone apps of various papers. (PCMag)
